In spring 2020, schools closed overnight. Three Hamburg-based teachers — Anne Lindholm, Marek Schöne and Lara Velez — improvised like everyone else with email lists and PDFs. Out of the frustration came an idea: not to build a twelfth tool for schools, but one that makes all the others redundant.
What started as a weekend initiative became Lumen Schools in summer 2020. Today 35 people from education, product and technology work on it from Hamburg's Schanzenviertel. Lumen was funded in 2023 in a seed round of around €4 million by early EdTech investors.

“We're building Lumen because we refuse to accept that teachers spend half their working day on admin — instead of with the children they're there for. Schools don't need yet another piece of software stacked on top. They need one that makes ten others redundant.”
Lumen is currently filling four roles in product development and customer success. Career changers from schools and education administration are explicitly welcome.

Lumen stays close to the schools using it. Tarek Sahin personally handles questions about rollout, onboarding and demo bookings. For strategic, editorial or press enquiries, Anne Lindholm is your contact.
